  34. A little Windows stuff here : A DLL (Dynamic Linked Library - or something) is 
  35. a file which holds (usually) functions for Windows programs to call upon.  For 
  36. instance, many simple programs that play video files in Windows don't actually 
  37. contain the routines to open, posistion, play, and close a video clip.  It all 
  38. comes down to routines in the DLL's of the Video for Windows stuff.

  40. The same is true for some of the 32 bit stuff in Windows itself.  WinNT is 32 
  41. bit.  Win9X will be 32 bit.  But Windows 3.1 and WFWG3.11 are both 16 bit 
  42. systems.  Win32s was made so that 16 bit Windows can use some of the 32 bit 
  43. stuff.  The "s" in Win32s is for "subset".  Win32s is a subset of the 32 bit 
  44. functions of 32 bit versions of Windows.

  47. OK - so what's this mean to you?  ...  All you need to do if you're the proud 
  48. owner of Windows 3.1 or WFWG 3.11 is do download the Win32s installation 
  49. files.  The new version is 1.25 and the self extracting version of the archive 
  50. is about 2 megs.  Uncompress this file in a temp directory and then run 
  51. Setup.Exe.
  52.  
  53. To obtain the file via on the internet, ftp to : 
  54. ftp.ncsa.uiuc.edu:/Mosaic/Windows/ and get the file w32sOLE.exe.  This is a 
  55. self extracting archive that will give you 2 files.  One will be another 
  56. archive file, and one will be a .BAT file.  Run the .BAT (I think it's called 
  57. install.bat, but it doesn't actually install).  This will spew a bunch of 
  58. files and directories in your current directory, so be sure to do it in a temp 
  59. directory.  You will eventually delete all these files.

  61. After it's done spewing, go to the directory called "DISK1" and run the 
  62. setup.exe from windows.  This will install the files into your /windows/system 
  63. directory.  It will also ask you if you want to install a game called 
  64. FreeCell.  Say "yes" if this is the first time you're installing Win32s.  This 
  65. game will intentionally and gratuitously (sp?) use the win23s calls to be sure 
  66. they were installed right.  Finally, it will restart windows.  Now you can 
  67. delete all those files that were created by the self extracting archives.

  70. See?  It's as easy as 1-2-3!  ;)  Yeah - I knew what I was doing and it still 
  71. took me about 20 minutes.
